17th of may!!
gratulerer med dagen!!! 17th of may in norway = big huge country-wide CELEBRATIONNNNNNNNN!!! everyone dresses up their best - guys in their suits or traditional clothes, and girls definitely in their traditional dresses from whatever part of norway they are from... and everyone runs around waving flags and "gratulerer med dagen"-ing ("congratulations with the day") each other!
so to start it off, tor arne & joffe, our cool norwegian friends, got up at 5am to decorate their cars in birch branches & get dressed up in suits and ties to pick us up to go to oslo super early in the morning to catch the ceremony and parade.
me and debbie decided to really get in on the fun... they have this tradition here in norway, when you graduate from high school, you're what they call a "Russ". which means you wear red overalls covered in iron-on patches & signed by friends for all of may 1st to 17th, and have a to-do list of crazy random things, like sleeping in a roundabout for a night! anyways, to get in on the grand-finale of the fun on may 17th, me and debbie borrowed tor arne and joffe's Russ pants & hats and pretended we were Russ for the day!
here we are...the canadian russ girls... a.k.a "canadisk russ"!! hehe... we even made special canadian "russ cards", which ill tell you more about when i get the pictures from laurent's camera!
anyways, we spent a super fun day running around in oslo...
where we met some of our other friends... also dressed up in their cool traditional norwegian outfits!! here we are at the king's palace, where he stood and other members of the royal family stood on the balcony and waved to everyone all day!! (maybe laurent got a good picture of him!)
and we watched the giant huge never-ending parade
with the cutest little kids all dressed up and playing in marching bands, so loud & proud!! =)
hehe... i wonder how many canadians don't even remember that our national holiday is july 1st! i actually can't remember where i was last year for it... i think maybe on a train between montreal and trois-pistoles! =)
anyways, it was super fun and i was super glad to be able to be a part of it!! and with being Russ with debbie and having laurent & our norwegian boys to share it with, i think it definitely made my experience of norway "complete"!!! couldn't have imagined a better 17th of may... and the 17th of may will never be quite the same in my head again! =D
much more to share... but it's bedtime, so it will come soon!!
xox!

looking good boys! nice to know that Norwegian boys have an excuse to get dressed up. i think on Canada Day, guys here just wear shorts and a t-shirt, and the majority of them get drunk :(
ooh, what a celebration! i especially love the "bizkit" hat that Deb is wearing..like Limp Bizkit, as well as your sweet pants! im surprised you even fit them, Bow! props to the decorated car, complete with foliage!

dude, your coveralls look like the ones we wear during frosh week @ Queen's. We paint them and have to wear them all week wihtout washing them and then we wear them @ Homecoming n stuff.
Remember you owe me a real email!!!! I was looking at flights to france & with travel cuts i *could possibly* get a return flight for $350+ taxes. It's not a definite that I'll be visiting, but I'd like to. See my blog as to why it's more of an issue!!! (l)

Thank's for celebrating 17th of may with us!!! I had a lot of fun:)
Thank you for the compliment Debs! No prob to dress up up keeping in mind that we get to spend a whole day with our sweet canadian friends...LOL
uhm... "Gratulerer med dagen" means "Congratulations with the day"...kind of;) happy mothers day is "Gratulerer med morsdagen!" Like Trygve said to Mrs. Choi...remember???
And while I'm being Mr.teacher...The reason for "Bizkit" on the hat is b/c bizkit is a dry cookie right? And people say my humour is "dry" like those bizkits...The clue is to give each other names that goes along with the person's personality...
Ha en fin kveld!

and tor arne.. haha i really should've put all my thoughts together in one comment... but yah, not sure really what you mean by dry humour, cuz in my head that means "haha but not" men uansett jeg synes at du er veldig moro eller morsom eller gøy eller... whatever word best describes fun & funny! ;)
By Rainbow Choi =), at Tue May 22, 04:31:00 PM
hey rainbow! country-wide par-tay, whoo hoo! everytime i read your blog, you're just having boatloads of fun! except for that finger incident, but i'm glad it turned out to be not so serious. =p

other potential personality traits derived from the term "bizkit" suitable for a human...young man:
-easily breakable
-bland with not much flavour
-crumby...or perhaps crumbly
-goes well with milk
-dry
i don't think Tor Arne is any of these :P
i think Bow would be a tic-tac: small, but bursting with flavour and energy!
By Anonymous, at Tue May 22, 06:36:00 PM
ahahha... tic tac. love it!
and nope, tor arne's not bland.. or crummy (!!) that's for sure!! lol!! and the rest don't even make sense so haha..
and steph!! congrats with STEP in calgary!!! it'll be a blast there - and you're like me i think, doesnt matter where you are or what you're doing, you still have boatloads of fun! and calgary, you'll just be the regular local cowgirl... and yah, west is best! maybe ill still see you!! woot!!
on a different note, it just hit me that the 17th of may in norway kinda reminds me of celebrating something in quebec city... can't remember what it was we were celebrating, but we had fleur-de-lys painted on our faces & were wearing blue & white leis... and everyone was painted in blue and white running around with quebec flags on the plains of abraham!!
By Rainbow Choi =), at Wed May 23, 06:03:00 AM
You know,Debs, men always have the last word in a conversation; "Yes, dear!" ;) So I guess you're right; I'm not any of those...
What's a tic-tac BTW? Is it similar to TimTam? Due to the description I couldn't agreed more about Rb!
Thank's Rainbow! "jeg synes du er morsom og det er gøy å henge sammen med deg!!" morsom=funny, gøy/morro=fun

i remember reading about ST. JEAN BAPTISTE DAY! (http://rainbow-in-montreal.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html)
complete with Quebec-pride and leis!
